Return to Team

The Powertrain subsytem is responsible for designing, developing, and integrating all systems related to power generation and delivery.

Technical Information

This includes building and maintenance of our Kawasaki ZX6R engine, tuning, intake and exhaust system design for optimal flow characteristics, drivetrain layout and gear ratio selection, and thermal management through cooling system design. The team utilizes a combination of simulation, dyno testing, and data analysis to refine engine performance and maximize efficiency within the constraints of the Formula SAE ruleset. Close collaboration with other subsystem ensures that the Powertrain operates reliably and cohesively within the overall vehicle architecture. From CAD to trackside troubleshooting, Powertrain plays a pivotal role in the car’s performance.

About the Powertrain Lead

Gallatin Morton is the current Powertrain Lead for the Sooner Racing Team. He has a background in road racing through the SCCA and a deep interest in engine and drivetrain systems, He leads the subsytem with a focus on extracting usable performance while maintaining reliability. His experience spans from hands-on fabrication to advanced calibration work, contributing to the team’s recent success—including a 4th place finish in acceleration at FSAE Michigan, competing against over 150 teams across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
