The Sooner Racing Team was first formed in 1994. A small group of engineering students at the University of Oklahoma were recruited by Professor Bill Patten to compete in the Formula SAE competition. Funded by the College of Engineering, these students formed OU's first FSAE team. Since then, the team has competed in FSAE events almost every year. Sooner Racing has grown in knowledge and performance since its inception, and is regarded by many as the flagship program of OU's College of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. The Sooner Racing Team continues operation under the supervision of advisor Dr. Chris Dalton.
The team hopes to continue its recent trend of success, promote its program and sponsors, and represent the University of Oklahoma in the largest collegiate engineering competition in the world.
"Joining the Sooner Racing Team was one of, if not the most important decision of my academic career. Formula SAE plays a crucial role in preparing students to enter the workforce with great efficacy. By fostering a hands-on learning environment, the team not only teaches the technical skills necessary for engineering and design but also emphasizes teamwork, project management, and innovative problem solving."
"SRT has played a huge role in my academic career. While on the team, I've gotten hands on experience that truly put my creativity and problem solving skills to the test, learned several new skills, and made lifelong friends. It completely shifted my perspective of engineering and reignited my curiosities. Both the successes and challenges we all faced together on the team have taught me countless valuable lessons and made me a better engineer."
"I originally joined SRT to gain hands-on engineering experience and because race cars are cool. Through SRT, I became a far better engineer than I ever could have from classes alone, which helped me land multiple internships and ultimately the job of my dreams. While becoming a better engineer was my original goal, along the way I had a ton of fun and made some great friends."
