FAQ
The first step to joining the Sooner Racing Team is to be a full time student at the University of Oklahoma. The team welcomes all majors to get involved and attend our weekly general meetings. At general meetings our Team Captain and subsystem leads will share progress updates and ongoing work being done. After this, the team splits up into their respective subsystem groups to further discuss plans for the upcoming week.
Another way to get involved is by simply showing up to the teams’ Saturday morning workdays at the Rawl Engineering Practice Facility or by reaching out via email or Social Media.
Of course! The Sooner Racing Team welcomes everyone regardless of technical or physical experience. Our team takes pride in its ability to develop professionals and leaders from the ground. Across all fields, we will take you through the process of learning new skills and becoming an experienced member of our team. The only requirements are commitment, dedication, and a passion for racing.
Technical skills: Through the team you can receive a deeper understanding of engineering principles within structural design, aerodynamic design, manufacturing processes, engine tuning, and power requirements.
Soft skills: Some of the most vital, and difficult, aspects of our team are management and documentation. Every year the team uses networking, budgeting, time management, and leadership skills to build a strong foundation for the team in the future.
It’s impossible to build a racecar without getting to know the people you’re working with. The team often holds social events and even has Formula 1 watch parties. Also, it’s just cool to build a racecar!
Every year, the team travels to two different competitions. The University of Texas at Arlington hosts the Annual Texas Autocross Invitational where we race the previous year’s build and meet other teams in a more relaxed setting without the pressure of judges, rules, and competition. This two-day event allows for less experienced drivers to gain exposure to high-speed driving and provides an opportunity for more members of our team to travel to a competition.
The second competition is our primary goal for the year. Hosted by Formula SAE at Michigan International Speedway, the team competes against 120 other universities in both static and dynamic events. Here we are judged and evaluated on the design and documentation of our car throughout the past year. The four dynamic events include: acceleration, autocross, skid pad, and endurance. Between these events, the team defends and presents our design philosophy and execution to a panel of industry professional judges.
Each competition provides teams the unique chance to demonstrate their creativity and engineering ability against teams from around the world.
We do! Every committed will have an opportunity to drive the car at some point during their time on SRT. After team drive-days, we evaluate which members performed the best and often give those people the chance to drive at one of our competitions.
Yes! Using the previous year’s data alongside new knowledge, the team designs and builds a brand new car. While some materials can be reused, the majority of the car contains new, in-house manufactured components.
Super fast.
